After visiting the seminary of the Society PiusX in Ecône, Switzerland, in 1987, Cardinal Gagnon (+2007) described it to John Paul II as "one of the best programmes of philosophy and theology I have ever seen... and remember: I was a seminary rector for years". And: "The system they have deserves to be copied in every seminary in the world. It is exemplary". Of Archbishop Lefebvre, Gagnon wrote: "He doesn't trust the Vatican. And who can blame him? Would you? For years he tried to negotiate with Villot and Garrone. And for years they only blocked his efforts to talk directly to the Holy Father and to reason with him. God bless Cardinal Gagnon. Of course "saint" John Paul II did not adopt the great Cardinal's good advice, and good recommendations of the SSPX
