Cardinal Müller: Impossible to Validly Ordain "Deaconesses"

It is impossible for women to validly receive the Sacrament of Orders whether as deacon, priest, or bishop, writes Cardinal Gerhard Müller to LifeSiteNews.com (September 30).

Müller underlines that this is “without doubt” a “definitive decision” and “a dogma of the Faith.”

This impossibility was obvious already before John Paul II formulated it in Ordinatio Sacerdotalis (1994).

Hold to Tradition
Yes it is true that women absolutely cannot be ordained as priests. But as a deacon?
“No woman under forty years of age is to be ordained a deacon, and then only after close scrutiny. If after receiving ordination and spending some time in the ministry she despises God’s grace and gets married, such a person is to be anathematised along with her spouse.” (Canon 15, Council of Chalcedon)

The Council of Chalcedon is an ecumenical council of the Catholic Church. What does Canon 15 of Chalcedon mean? Seems to suggest there was ordained female deacons at one point in the history of the church. Ultimately the authority of the Church will decide on this.

The site you accessed has a weak translation. It should read "deaconess," not deacon. There is a profound difference in that the deaconess did not receive Holy Orders (although she was prayed over). The role of deaconesses has been thoroughly researched and it was NOT the female equivalent of the diaconate. Right! Before JP II it was already impossible.

It's God's ban on female Ordination, not JP II's

Neither valid nor invalid. The name of the "deaconesses" does not apply.
