Why is the Vatican Lashing Out at Contemplative Nuns?

Carballo
. The contemplative orders are under siege, not by a vocation crisis, but by Archbishop Josè Rodrìguez Carballo, the secretary for the Religious Congregation, Mary Cuff writes in Crisis Magazine. In 2018, Carballo released Cor Orans, a series of toxic regulations on female monastic orders. As minister general of the Order of Friars Minor, Carballo was responsible for a huge financial scandal including drug and arms trafficking. The investigation is ongoing. Presently, Carballo enjoys diplomatic immunity and lives in the Vatican.

Killer of Monasteries. For Mary Cuff, Cor Orans expresses Carballo’s conviction that contemplative monasticism has outlived its usefulness. In 2015, he claimed that contemplative life “says hardly anything to people today.” Even when an order has flourishing vocations, Carballo dismisses it as a fluke. Since Cor Orans, Carballo has closed hundreds of monasteries around the world. Within the first week of implementing the document, 30 monasteries were closed in Italy alone.

Overkill. One of the harshest changes in Cor Orans is that Carballo wants formation in a monastic community to last from nine to twelve years, at minimum. Before Cor Orans, nine years was the maximum allowed. Cuff comments, “The best marine would not survive a nine-year boot camp. Why must nuns?” She stresses that most married couples would agree that a nine-year engagement (or worse, a nine-year diocesan-run marriage prep course that meets every single day) is overkill.

Carballo wants contemplative Novice Mistresses to attend continuing education classes outside of her monastery. If they fail to conform to these rigid rules and to the policies set forth in these programs, the entire monastery’s future can be threatened by the federation which is the worst requirement of Cor Orans. Every monastery is forced to join a federation. Catholic monasteries, especially in the US, have attempted to form their own federations, but Rome forces them to join anti-Catholic federations.

Federations violate the autonomy of monasteries. Nevertheless, a federation has unchecked power. It can require a monastery to surrender money and sisters at any time, for any reason. It can inspect a monastery at any time, can mandate any rule change, and serves as an official death panel for monasteries because Cor Orans arbitrarily defines a viable community as one that has six or more fully professed members. This means that a monastery can have five professed nuns and ten novices, some of whom may have been there for almost a decade—due to the new minimum years of formation—and yet this is technically a nonviable monastery. Important point: The assets of closed monasteries are split between the federation, the diocese, and the Holy See.

Cor Orans means ''Praying Heart'', Vultum Dei Quaerere means ''Seek the Face of God'' and the now famous Traditionis Custodes ''Guardians of Tradition.''

In this time of poorly concealed persecution, religious congregations shall add several lines to their monastic rules:

- Don't listen to them. Don't talk with them.
- Don't open the door for them.
- Put stronger door locks and frames.
- Hire faithful security guards.
- Pray Saint Micheal the Archangel and the Heavenly Hosts every day!

The contemplative nuns are deemed to be the prayer engine of the Church. However, some but not all orders have been persuaded away from their foundational beliefs. I wonder then who did the persuading in a closed order. The contemplative orders are a most important part of the Church and the lives of the people they pray for. I wonder then who did the persuading in a closed order. The contemplative orders are a most important part of the Church and the lives of the people they pray for. They offer beautiful and powerful service to God. But who is praying for them and should we not give them better support and security. I think they need to hold onto their real estate and independence 😇😇

The New Religion doesn't believe in prayer or the sacraments.
