This statement legitimizes the questioning of his pro-life bona fides (if one ever actually believed he was pro-life). And, to be clear, the debate about “personhood” centers much more around what constitutes a person, generally, than whether an unborn child is a person. This is another of his infinitude of straw men. I am going to presume that he falls into the category that Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden fell into, back in the ‘80s, of being “personally opposed to abortion , but in favor of legality.” That would not make him pro-life.

We know fellow human beings as persons. The only time this identity is decoupled is to justify the removal of rights from the target of extermination. Of course it will be debated by evil people who wish to justify murder. There is no excuse however for Francis to give any quarter whatsoever to this spurious distinction.
