It's an old expression, but it is more commonly stated as "assisting at" instead of just "assisting." In former days, the phrase "I assisted at Mass" meant the same as "I attended Mass." It doesn't necessarily imply that a person had some liturgical function other than being present. Another expression was "to hear Mass." That meant the same as "to attend Mass."
