Francis has appointed Bishop Steven J. Raica of Gaylord, Michigan, as the new Bishop of Birmingham, Alabama.
He is replacing Bishop Robert J. Baker who is retiring on age grounds.

Bishop Raica was born on November 8, 1952 and ordained to the priesthood on October 14, 1978. He was named Bishop of Gaylord in 2014.
