Russia: Altar Consecrated in the Extraordinary Rite

Fr. Ray Blake has reported on his blog that on Sunday 20 June, Archbishop Paul Pezzi, the Ordinary of Archdiocese of the Mother Of God in Moscow, Russia, consecrated a refurbished wooden altar for the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. This altar is situated in the Big Chapel of the Moscow Cathedral of Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary. The consecration ceremony followed the 'usus antiquor.' After consecration of the altar, Fr. Augustine Dzenzel celebrated Mass in the Extraordinary Form. This is the first time since 1936, when the ruling Ordinary of this Archdiocese participated in the traditional Latin liturgy.

Yesterday Pope Benedict XVI visited the Don Orione Centre located in Rome's Monte Mario district to bless a statue of the Virgin "Salus populi romani". It is nine meters high and made of gilded copper. On October 12 of last year it fell from its nineteen-meter-high pedestal. Now, it has been restored. The statue was raised on Monte Mario in 1953 to fulfill a popular vow pronounced during World War II. The Holy Fahter said: "In their vow to the Virgin, apart from promising prayer and devotion, Romans also undertook to perform works of charity."Thias he said recalling Don Orione’s motto: "Only charity will save the world".

Pope Will Visit Cardinal Newman’s Rooms

Anna Arco from Catholic Herald has announced on her blog that Benedict XVI is to visit Cardinal John Henry Newman’s rooms in the Birmingham Oratory on the day he beatifies the Cardinal. Newman lived there in his final years. The Birmingham Oratory holds his library as well as the relics that were found when his grave was opened in 2008.

Pallium For 38 Bishops

On June 29th , Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, Benedict XVI will bestow the pallium on 38 metropolitan archbishops, including 14 from Europe and six from North America. The pallium is a white band embroidered with six black crosses and worn over the shoulders. Worn by the Pope and by metropolitan archbishops, the pallium symbolizes authority and expresses the special bond between the bishops and the Roman Pontiff.
