Ignored Cardinal: Why Does the West Want to Destroy Itself?
Hell. Jerry D. Salyer, a veteran of the US Navy who is now an educator and freelanced writer, wrote on CrisisMagazine.com about Cardinal Sarah’s ignored views on Russia and the West. He recalls that Archbishop Viganò is not the only churchman who has been looking East to remedy “the errors of the West.” Salyer quotes from Sarah’s 2019 book The Day Is Now Far Spent in which he condemns finance capitalism and globalization. Quote: “Globalized humanity, without borders, is a hell.”
Provocation. This is what Sarah says about Russia. Quote, “In Russia, the Orthodox Church has to a great extent resumed its pre-1917 role as the moral foundation of society. This arouses political opposition, but also a deep hatred on the part of the post-Christian elites of the West, not only vis-à-vis Russia, but also against the Russian Church and, by extension, against Orthodoxy itself. The overtly political attack that aims to pit Ukraine against the Russian Church under the authority of Patriarch Cyril of Moscow is a dangerous, stupid provocation.”
Hysterical reaction. Unlike most Americans, Sarah does not accept a “wall of separation” between Church and state, Salyer notices. He does not dismiss the Russian Church either. Sarah is aware that the 2014 coup in Kiev which overthrew Ukraine’s government was backed by Obama. He stresses that the US show a hysterical reaction to the January 2021 events in Washington D.C. but have no problem with violent insurrection, provided it happens to somebody else.
Russia Protects Christians. For Sarah, the preservation of a nation’s Christian heritage is a good thing, regardless of how shallow the motives of politicians may be, while – quote – “the West seems happy to see its churches turned into gymnasiums, its Romanesque chapels fall into ruin, its religious patrimony threatened by a total desacralization. Russia, on the contrary, is spending considerable sums to restore the treasures of Orthodoxy.” Sarah also knows that the Syrian Christians owe their survival to Moscow because Russia plays its role as protector of the Christian minorities.
Self-Destruction. Cardinal Sarah’s point is that the West’s greatest enemy has never been al-Qaida, ISIS, or China, much less Russia, but rather the West itself. Salyer quotes Sarah, “Why does the West want to annihilate what it built in the first place? The real enemy of the West is the West itself, its imperviousness to God and to spiritual values, which resembles a process of lethal self-destruction.”
