Francis’ 2.5-Priests Cardinal Has Already Died

Brunei Cardinal Cornelius Sim, 69, passed away at 8:28 am in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taoyuan City, Taiwan on 29 May.

Suffering from cancer, he arrived on May 8 at the hospital, had to undergo a regulation quarantine, and only then received a cell therapy treatment to which he didn’t respond.

During such therapies, cells are introduced into a patient, for example, by transplanting white blood cells (T-cells) capable of fighting cancer cells for instance against leukemia.

Francis made Sim who had a long journey to the priesthood, a Cardinal only six months ago. Due to the Covid-19 regime and for health reasons, he could not attend the consistory.

At his 2018 Ad limina visit, Sim told Francis that the Apostolic Vicariate of Brunei had “two and a half” priests. It consists of three parishes. In December 2020, Sim was named a member of the Congregation for the Clergy.

Under the pretext of the “peripheries” Francis often names institutionally irrelevant cardinals. This weakens the importance of the College of Cardinals and strengthen his personal power.
