"If Celibacy Becomes Optional, It Degenerates into A Lifestyle"

Martin Rothweiler, the director of EWTN Germany, observed on Katholisch.de (January 17) that the Ratzinger/Sarah book is presented as being “against Francis because it defends celibacy."

However, he stresses that Francis has claimed that he is against optional celibacy.

Rothweiler stresses that celibacy is about a proper understanding of the priesthood.

If celibacy and marriage were to coexist as optional options for the priest, celibacy would no longer be perceived as a testimony to heaven, "but as a choice of a personal lifestyle,” Rothweiler warns.

Martin Rothweiler, le directeur de EWTN Allemagne, a observé sur Katholisch.de (17 janvier) que le livre de Ratzinger/Sarah est présenté comme étant « contre François parce qu'il défend le célibat ».

Cependant, il souligne que François a affirmé être contre le célibat optionnel.

Rothweiler insiste sur le fait que le célibat est une bonne compréhension du sacerdoce.

Si le célibat et le mariage devaient coexister en tant qu'options facultatives pour le prêtre, le célibat ne serait plus perçu comme un témoignage pour le ciel, « mais comme un choix d'un style de vie personnel », prévient Rothweiler.

This is a very good point, that if optional, celibacy would be reduced to a personal lifestyle choice rather than a testimony to heaven.
This may blend well with being "other ordered".

Rothweiler fails utterly to understand that dispensations from the rule of celibacy can and are permitted within the discipline of Roman Catholic holy orders.
