US Bishop Shows How to Circumvent Francis' Rescript

Diocesan bishops are "much more in tune" with what’s going on in their diocese than a Vatican office, noted Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki, Illinois …

God bless Bishop Paprocki.

@Liam When the Russians invaded Poland and took over their churches and used them for warehouses, priests would say Mass outside in the empty parking lot.
Josephmary AnneJochaim
@Liam Ronan why so? its amazing with Irelands tradition during the penal laws, where the mass was banned and irish people resorted to making rocks in a field their church, that any irish person has to ask thst question. The only difference this time is the the means by which satan attacks the mass.So Liam to your "to have any meaningful discussion " comment vado retro Satana.
Liam Ronan
@Josephmary AnneJochaim Here's a bit of latin for you. "Ad hominem".
Liam Ronan
For any meaningful discussion here, don't you think the first logical question to be addressed is: "What precisely is a 'non-parochial' church?
Adrien
It is a church not used by a parish.
Liam Ronan
@Adrien Thank you for the reply. I would like to go to the ecclesiastical sources which precisely define what a 'non-parochial' church is and any limitations attached to worship and prayer in such churches. Perhaps Bishop Paprocki published something in that respect?

Can. 515 §1. A parish is a certain community of the Christian faithful stably constituted in a particular church, whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor (parochus) as its proper pastor (pastor) under the authority of the diocesan bishop.

Can. 1219 In a church that has legitimately been dedicated or blessed, all acts of divine worship can be performed, without prejudice to parochial rights.

Can. 1223 By the term oratory is understood a place for divine worship designated by permission of the ordinary for the benefit of some community or group of the faithful who gather in it and to which other members of the faithful can also come with the consent of the competent superior.

Can. 1226 By the term private chapel is understood a place for divine worship designated by permission of the local ordinary for the benefit of one or more physical persons.

Can. 1228 Without prejudice to the prescript of can. 1227, the permission of the local ordinary is required for Mass or other sacred celebrations to take place in any private chapel.

From what I understand, canon 1219 refers to a church within a parochial territory without being a parochial church.
(no importance) Btw, if I could rewrite canon 515§1., it would be like this: ...whose pastoral care is entrusted to a parish priest (parochus) as its proper pastor (pastor)...More

@Adrien I like your rewrite of Canon 515. I believe that the English translation was written from an American point of view, where parochus is almost always rendered, pastor. In the US, when we hear “parish priest,” we think of any priest assigned to the parish, even if he is not the “proper pastor.”
Adrien
@John A Cassani I thought that! I almost wrote ‘’to a leading parish priest’’ but I did not to avoid a superfluous repetition because right after it says ‘’as its proper pastor’’ like if the notion of leadership was embedded in ‘’proper pastor’’ (and English being a foreign language for me, I was not sure if 'leading parish priest' would sound bad or if there were a mistake in this formulation …More

I just wanted to make sense of the English translation because it has two different meanings for the same word. Also, when I said ‘’if I could rewrite the canon’’ it was just a form of speech because I knew that not having the same word twice contrary to the original canon in English, the Latin words were then not needed.

@Adrien The truth is, “proper pastors,” “parish priests,” or whatever other names people around the world call them, mean a lot less than they used to. The canonical prerogatives of pastors are far less than they used to be, and most Catholics today aren’t even aware that they are supposed to get permission from their pastors for, say, getting married or confirmed outside of one’s parish. The canonical prerogatives of pastors are far less than they used to be, and most Catholics today aren’t even aware that they are supposed to get permission from their pastors for, say, getting married or confirmed outside of one’s parish. Of course, where the old books are concerned, it will be all the easier to legally prevent them in non-parochial churches, since they need special permission for baptisms, confirmations and weddings anyway. There are still advantages to being part of a parish. Of course, TC speaks of evaluating personal parishes, as to whether they should continue. I highly doubt that Rome would stand in the way of a bishop who wants to get rid of the FSSP, whether they have a proper parish or not.

@John A Cassani ''I highly doubt that Rome would stand in the way of a bishop who wants to get rid of the FSSP, whether they have a proper parish or not.'' Nobody will disagree with you!
Note: For the readers of this thread, I would like to say this: I was not serious in my first reply. I posted the two pictures to be sarcastic. This is Québécois humor. The two churches being unfit for Holy Mass…More

That Vatican official newspaper is a pile of Woke garbage, copying the agenda of so much of the USA media. Fortunatly, in the last 10 years, their subscriptions have plunged to next to nothing. I would never read such crap! 🤪

Good thing Francis returned from Africa before Lent started, or he would have had to walk home.

More and more I hope Bishops everywhere, and even in the VAtican, defy, disobey, and ignore everything negative or restrictive or meant to end the Tridentine Latin Mass that Bergoglio and his thugs like Roche try to impose.

Maybe the Anglican Church is now the way, the pope must go, I’m a rank and file catholic Jesuit educated guy. This pope seems out of touch with us

As Viganò says: "Bergoglio is entirely extraneouous to the papacy." Going with Henry VIII is nuts! Nothing Bergoglio does has anything to do with the papacy.
