Francis “Revokes Priesthood” of Political Activist

Francis has “revoked the priesthood” [whatever that means] of Father Martinho Germano da Silva Gusmão, 53, clearing his way to run as an independent for Timor-Leste president in next year's polls.

According to UcaNews.com (November 22), Gusmao’s Baucau Diocese stated that “from today onwards, Mr. Martinho Germano da Silva Gusmão will live his life as an ordinary layman and continue to bear witness to the faith as a good layman.”

Gusmão who studied “political science” at the Gregoriana in Rome had requested the “dismissal” from Francis in 2020. After losing the elections, Gusmão will likely “return” to the priesthood for lack of better options.
