Communion in the Hand – Another Evil Which Needs to Be Stopped

Authorised Disobedience. A book by various authors on Communion in the hand has been published a couple of weeks ago in France by the editor Contretemps. The preface is by Cardinal Burke. One contribution by Monsignor Nicola Bux is entitled: Communion in the hand, an authorised disobedience. It debunks the myths that Communion in the hand was authorised by Paul VI and confirmed by John Paul II and Benedict XVI as one of two normal ways of receiving communion.

Pardoning the Disobedient. Bux writes that Paul VI confirmed the prohibition of Communion in the hand, exhorting bishops, and priests to – quote - "submit scrupulously to this newly confirmed law." However, with a duplicity, typical for the Vatican, he allowed bishops in whose dioceses there was massive resistance to this prohibition, to – quote – “pardon” the disobedient. Now, in these same countries, the bishops will remove a priest from all his functions if he refuses to distribute Communion in the hand.

No Backbone. Near his death, Paul VI ordered to suspend the granting of new pardons and made it clear that, even where a pardon had been granted, Communion in the hand was to be discouraged but this order was not obeyed. Months later, his successor John Paul II confirmed this decision ordering that Communion in the hand should not be authorised in any more countries. But this suspension lasted only five years. When John Paul II visited Switzerland in June 1984, he himself distributed Communion in the hand.

Triumph of Disobedience. Cardinal Robert Sarah, the former Prefect of the Liturgy Congregation, noticed that the way how Communion in the hand spread was imposed in a way – quote – “that is not according to the ways of God". Today, the paradox is that the faithful who refuse Communion in the hand, are accused of – quote - "disobedience." In other words: Anarchy and disobedience have finally triumphed.
