Cardinal Arborelius Attacks FSSPX: "Sacraments Must Not Be Registered in Church Books"
On August 15, Cardinal Anders Arborelius of Stockholm, Sweden, published a "clarification" regarding a recent visit by Bishop Bernard Fellay of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX).
The statement emphasizes that the Bishop of Stockholm is solely responsible for overseeing the diocese's liturgical life and safeguarding its "unity." "Another bishop cannot perform episcopal ceremonies within our diocese without permission from the bishop of the diocese, Cardinal Arborelius."
Bishop Bernard Fellay is the former superior general of the FSSPX. Cardinal Arborelius claims that the Fraternity "does not live and work in communion with the Holy See, and its canonical status is unclear."
He laments that Bishop Fellay has performed episcopal ceremonies in the Stockholm diocese: "Summoning a church leader to the diocese on a private initiative is contrary to church law and leads to division and discord." …More
Although Pope Francis has permitted the FSSPX to administer the sacraments, including confession and marriage, Cardinal Arborelius deems those administered by FSSPX priests as "valid but illicit."
An old argument. BUT the Church is in a crisis and sometimes emergency action must take place.
