The melody of "Süßer die Glocken nie klingen" was borrowed by Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger, the author of the lyrics, from a traditional Thuringian harvest song entitled "Dort sinket die Sonne im Westen" ("There the sun sets in the west").
