Parents Who Want Their Children to Be Baptized Need Instruction

Ireland

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has instructed the pastors of his Dublin archdiocese to offer “appropriate catechesis” for parents who wish their children to be baptized. The archbishop said that parents must be properly educated about the meaning of Baptism. They should understand that the sacrament is not merely a family celebration but an entry into an active Christian community. Parishes should design appropriate educational offerings to avoid making parents resent the new requirement, the archbishop said: “Programs should be attractive, rather than simply compulsory.”

Generous Answer

UK

The Catholic relief group “Aid to the Church in Need” has called for prayers for the success of Pope Benedict’s pastoral visit to the United Kingdom in September. Now, “Aid to the Church in Need” has announced that its benefactors have responded generously to that call. The drive has netted pledges for 31,000 decades of the Rosary and 130 hours of Eucharistic adoration. Responding to a particular appeal to offer a Mass stipend to a priest in a needy country, ACN said that 11,000 Masses will be offered for the Pope’s intentions.

Mexican Bishop Speaks Out

Mexico

Bishop Felipe Arizmendi from San Cristobal, in southern Mexico, has criticized the Mexican Supreme Court's decision to allow adoptions by same-sex couples. He noted that the court likely “acted according to the letter of the law, but certainly not according to justice.” On Monday, the 11 justices voted 9-2 against challenges presented by federal prosecutors. They had argued that the law fails to protect adoptive children against possible negative effects or discrimination, and does not guarantee their rights to a traditional family.

✍️ This is such good news for us here in Ireland. What a wonderful catechesis opportunity when people request Baptism for their babies. And it is still the done thing even amongst those who don't practice the Faith. It's like the prophesy "a little child shall lead them" - their own children leading them back to the Catholic Church. - Blessings - Rene
