Exclusive: Candle-lit Procession in Honour of Our Lady of Willesden - By Dr Geoffrey Brushwood

This is an exclusive video from the 118th Annual Torchlit Procession at the Shrine of Our Lady of Willesden, north west London, which took place on Sunday 20th October 2019.

The celebration began at the shrine at 7.00pm. The homilist was Westminster Auxiliary Bishop John Sherrington.

This little known shrine was once a popular centre of Marian devotion in medieval England, second only to the Shrine at Walsingham in importance.

Although a Church dedicated to Our Lady of Willesden existed since 1170, it became identified as a Shrine around 1475-1500.

Tradition says that Our Lady appeared at an oak at Willesden and a Holy well sprang up there at which many were cured. The shrine was particularly popular at the time of the Black Death, and many miraculous cures were attributed to visits to the Shrine.

St Thomas Moore visited the Shrine in April of 1534 shortly before his arrest and beheading, no doubt to seek comfort from Our Lady of Willesden, in his resolve not to accede to King Henry VIII’s ‘Act of supremacy’ at which he declared himself the head of the Church in England.

Moore’s beloved Shrine too received the same destructive attention by the King’s court, and in the autumn of 1538, Thomas Cromwell the new Lord Chancellor, burnt the beautiful oak statue of Our Lady of Willesden along with the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Walsingham, and with other Marian images at a large bonfire he had created in Chelsea.

After centuries of persecution of Catholics in England, upon which many Martyrs were gifted to the Church, the Catholic hierarchy was re established in England by the Papal Bull Universalis Exclesiae by Pope Pius IX in 1850. Thereafter the devotion to our Lady of Willesden was rekindled, and a new statue of Our Lady of Willesden was carved from an oak that stood on the site of the former Church, and a new Shrine to house the statue was created. Cardinal Bourne dedicated this shrine in 1931.

The statue of Our Lady of Willesden stands in the apse above the Lady Altar in the Church, and inscribed around the apse are the words : ‘ imago per nefas abducta amore filiorumq reducta’ (this image looted by wicked men has been restored by the love of thy children).

England, once declared the dowery of Mary, by King Richard II in 1381 will be re-dedicated as the dowery of Mary at the feast of the Annunciation in 2020, so that the true faith looted from England will be restored in this great land once more.

England is the dowry of Blessed Virgin Mary, since King Richard II, in a sovereign decision, promised Her his kingdom in this form of giving, if She would help him to subdue the general revolt of the peasantry. He most likely submitted this offer on June 13, 1381, feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. The Holy Virgin arranged for this urgent state matter at an express speed, following the thoughts of the ruler, and in this way this peculiar dowry* was legally taken over by Her.
A dowry by its nature can be consumed when the bride marries. Can the Virgin Mary marry again? Yes, She can: Saint Hermann Joseph, O.Praem., the German mystic, this is the crown proof. However, his death (April 4, 1241) put an end to their mystical marriage and we are again dealing with Virgin Maid Mary. That is why King Richard II could offer her a dowry, and She could receive this gift.
And so we come to modern times, when the events described in the Revelation of Saint John are unfolding before our very eyes. In this comprehensive prophecy, the Woman Clothed in the Sun and Her Son-Man play a key role. The Church's tradition rightly equates the Woman with Virgin Mary. In contrast, the identification of the Son-Man as Jesus Christ creates a significant problem, because stressing that the son is a man only makes sense if Her son is also Her man, that is, Her spouse. The Blessed Virgin passed away from this world as a maid and widow, and now at the end of time She marries one of Her sons whom She gave birth to as our Mother the Holy Church. The son-man from the Apocalypse is Her spouse and, as such, identical with the Paraclete. It is only in this perspective that the history of salvation of the human race reveals all its divine end. The Paraclete and the Woman Clothed in the Sun after a period of persecution** of the Church will bring a small remnant of faithful Christians to the Kingdom of God on earth.
Characteristic thing: Pius XII reminded the Church of the person of Saint Herman Joseph, confirming his worship on August 11, 1958. By this act Pope pointed out, unaware, a pair of mystics contemporary to Saint Hermann of Steinfeld: Saint Clara (+11 August 1253) and Saint Francis (+3 October 1226). Premonstratensians commemorate St. Hermann on May 24, means on the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, which again shows that the Paraclete-Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary was given to faithful as their Helper. The Paraclete is not the Holy Spirit, but he is full of the Holy Spirit, just like His Virgin Spouse Mary the Maid. The last remark: After the birth of the Lord Jesus, Herod - inspired by Satan – killed all boys under the age of 2 years in Bethlehem to kill Jesus Christ the King. In the last century unborn children are murdered on a mass scale - why? Satan urges infanticide not only to win souls for himself, but also to hunt down Him, who will be known as the Son-Man of the apocalyptic Woman, Her Spuse, the second Comforter.
* Saint Thomas More, Lord High Chancellor of England, not only cares about the condition of the Holy Virgin's dowry, but even multiplies it. All states and peoples belonging to the British Commonwealth also form part of this estate. Queen Elizabeth the Second might one day ask: “And whence is this to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” [Luke 1, 43] She would hear in response: "For my dowry, madam."
** The tribulation is aimed at shedding the elect from among many called.
