Not About Unity. The suppression of the Roman Mass by Traditionis Custodes is not, as claimed, about the Church’s unity, the Polish lecturer Tomasz Dekert from the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Krakow explained. On the contrary, Dekert sees a schism based on the alienation of the hierarchical and academic elites from the ordinary faithful. For him, this has already become apparent with the introduction of the New Mass. For Dekert, this schism began when Church elites developed feelings of omnipotence and wanted to change the Church according to their own ideas. The Old Rite was accepted by all Catholics, regardless of social classes, political opinions, and cultural background. The New Mass caused this unity to break down as non-traditional rituals were imposed on the Church from above.
