Gänswein: Religion, Sexual Behavior Will "Not Matter" At Last Judgement

Whether one was homosexual or not will "not matter" at the Last Judgment, Archbishop Georg Gänswein claimed during a talk in Karlsruhe, Germany (June 4).

Gänswein is the private secretary of Benedict XVI.

According to CatholicNewsAgency.com, he compared practicing homosexuality ["homosexual partnership"] with being a nurse, saying that both are "accidental" to being a human being and are "not essential" to it [which is true].

He explained that all homosexuals, divorcees, atheists etc will be in front of God's judgment [which is also true].

Then, according to Gänswein, ones "being a human being" is decisive, "not accidental circumstances like sexual orientation, length of a partnership, worldview etc." [which is wrong].

Since all sins are accidental to the essence of the personhood and religion is a worldview ("Weltanschauung"), all sins and all religions would, according to Gänswein, be irrelevant at the Last Judgment.

The tentative conclusion to be had from Ganswein remarks is Catholic moral teaching on sexuality and marriage is rather pointless as sexuality and its practice are "accidental". I see this as heretical.

What? Of what does the Final Judgment consist, then? Is the only question "Did you have a human nature?"

This guy is not a Catholic. This is a different faith, folks. That said, Jorge will probably make him a Cardinal.

This is either confused translation or reporting or else Ganswein is simply following the master of confusion himself, Bergoglio. The nature and call of human being is the freedom to choose between good and evil as God, not men, has defined them. The rest is accidental claptrap.

Holiness is also accidental. There is not an essential difference between a murderer and Maximillian Kolbe--both are still men.
Abp Georg Gänswein is theologically deficient. No surprise, that.More

The accidentals are chosen. The human being chooses to distort his humanity in the pursuit and patterning of theses perverse accidentals. I cannot see how that choice is not a decisive one. Unless he means that God judges the perverse choices and not the resulting accidentals but why the obscurity?

I suspect you have misunderstood Archbishop Ganswein's remarks.
Certainly that is the impression I get from a Google translation into English of his Karlsruhe speech that was given in German. He was certainly not downplaying the importance of homosexual behaviour, but pointing out the difficulties that come up when secularised society refuses to recognise Catholic teaching in moral matters (such as …More

It might be good to point out that as well as working for Pope Francis he remains - as far as I know - secretary to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
