Greg Pope, the liaison between the bishops and the Parliament assured them that comments by Portsmouth bishop Philip Egan on Canon Law forbidding Communion to “manifest grave sinners,” would not be applied to them. In an interview Egan declared that denying Communion to someone engaged publicly in grave sin is an “act of mercy” and a “medicinal” remedy for Catholics.
A Syracuse city board in upstate New York has given a Muslim group the go-ahead to remove six crosses from the roof and spires of the century-old former Holy Trinity Catholic Church so the now-vacant Gothic structure can be used as a mosque. The church was closed in 2010. The area’s Islamic community is thriving.
