Italian Synod: Sin and Vice are the Points of Departure

Perugia Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, the President of the Italian bishops, presented Francis with a proposal for a synod for Italy.

Francis received Bassetti with four more Italian bishops on February 27. Bassetti told VaticanNews.va that this synod will “listen to people’s lives in order to draw up proposals.” Were the synod Catholic, it would be the other way around: listening to God’s revelation in order to change peoples' lives.

For years, Francis has called on the Italian bishops to start a synod but they dragged their feet. In January he lost his famous patience and ordered "synodality" publicly and in a dictatorial manner.

So far, all of Francis’ synods and synod-like assemblies have been a smokescreen to rubber-stamp decision which had been taken beforehand.
