France

Next month, Bishop Dominique Rey of the Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon will ordain two priests according to the Old Rite – the blog Rorate Caeli reports. Both will be priests of the diocese. The diocese has opened its doors to seminarians who wish to become diocesan priests while continuing to prefer the Old Rite. The policy does not seem to have brought about the divisions that many predicted. Last June Bishop Rey has already ordained 14 priests and 11 deacons in the New Rite.

During his Wednesday audience in Castelgandolfo, the Holy Father dedicated his catechesis to Saint John Eudes, whose feastday is celebrated on August 19th. The Holy Father described him as a man of immense courage. The saint’s particular contribution was the foundation of a religious congregation dedicated to the task of giving solid formation to the diocesan priesthood. He encouraged seminarians to grow in holiness and to trust in God’s love revealed to humanity in the priestly heart of Jesus and in the maternal heart of Mary”.

In the small West African nation of Guinea-Bissau, a Muslim radio station has agreed to let a priest have a regular radio show. At the same time, the Catholic station Radio Sol Mansi will permit an imam to have a similar show. Father Davide Sciocco, Italian missionary who will host the Catholic show says: “I'm not sure if this is the first experience of this type but it is surely one of the first,” “I will refer to the Gospel every time in telling a story”. Nearly half of the nation’s 1.5 million people hold to indigenous beliefs; 40% are Muslim, 9% are Catholic.

The 92 years old maestro perpetuo of the Sistine Chapel under five Popes, Mons. Domenico Bartolucci has never stopped celebrating the Mass of all time “la messa di sempre” – as he put it in an interview that can be found on the blog rorate-caeli. Mons. Bartolucci was ordained in the early Forties. He said in the interview that to defend the Old Rite is not the same as being a worshipper of ancient times; it is to be “eternal”.
