Modern children’s literature is dedicated to correcting all that which came before it: and yet it doesn’t understand it. Are authors like Julia Donaldson unable to understand stories on any level other than a wholly literal one?

If you want to inspire children to strive and overcome adversity for a valuable object, you couldn’t do better than Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. But children are taught to mock and reject the old stories, and are given this thinly-veiled and badly written polemic instead.
