Vatican welcomes Obama gun control proposal
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."
The Vatican's chief spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed to members of the U.S. Congress "to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths."
"I am with them," Lombardi said, in an editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican's moral support in favor of firearm limits.
"The initiatives announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction," Lombardi said.

Ok, Vatican. I totally understand that you guys see guns as something that has no place in civilized society.

As a Catholic I say let the pope AND Obama give up THEIR armed body guards first!

(AP) The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."

I doubt the credibility of this article since the source is the far-left Associated Press. And, furthermore, just what is "The Vatican" [sic]? As I understand it (and I very well may be wrong), unless the Pope himself utters the words, there's nothing official in a statement attributed to an entity as nebulous as "The Vatican".
------------------------------------------------------

As always, the media find one person, who in this case happens to be the spokesman for the Vatican who they make look like is speaking for the pope.

--------------------------------------------------

The “Vatican” is not the Pope or the Church. And I don’t know who this chief “spokesman” is or what his position is, but he doesn’t speak for the Church.

The Church has always supported the concepts of Just War and self defense—which includes defense of family and neighbors.

I’d say this guy is some kind of well-meaning, liberal nerd, who should have been reined in before spreading this junk all over the leftwing media like this. And by his title he’s not a Cardinal or a bishop, but just a priest.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Lombardi is a nut on the US Constitution, out of touch with freedom, and will himself likely be swallowed up by Al Qaida next, for lack of an armed citizenry and effeminate military, in a country run by those who eschew the Church.

Laughable that this odd little man is considered to speak as, “the Vatican”.
-------------------------------------------------------

The Catholic Church teaching is crystal clear:
In his Encyclical Letter from 1995, EVANGELIUM VITAE, Pope John Paul II writes:

"...legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another's life, the common good of the family or of the State. Unfortunately, it happens that the need to render the aggressor incapable of causing harm sometimes involves taking his life. In this case, the fatal outcome is attributable to the aggressor whose actions brought it about, even though he may not be morally responsible because of a lack of the use of reason."

Pope John Paul II knew exactly what happens when innocents are disarmed, having lived under both Nazism and communism. He did not believe in disarming citizens and neither does the Catholic Church, this spokesperson's personal opinion notwithstanding.

This is AP and they just peruse looking for a headline like this.
The Pope certainly did not say this.
read it.

This is a Jesuit priest who is in charge of the press office. He cannot bear the temptation to mouth off even knowing the AP is going to headline this as if it is more important than the Papal stance on (against) abortion.

Let’s test thei veracity by seeing what the AP d heads say this coming Tuesday, the 40 year commemoration a day DECLARED by the Vatican as a day of prayer for legal protection of the unborn.

Let’s see what the AP says about how many tens and hundreds of thousands come out on a cold January day for the March for life.

They will not talk about it and certainly not how many young people are out there and tey will not quote the vatican press office.

From Wiki:
Upon assuming the directorate, Lombardi said he would not be a papal “spokesman” since he believes Benedict XVI does not need an interpreter, saying, “I don’t think my role is to explain the Pope’s thinking or explain the things that he already states in an extraordinarily clear and rich way.”[3] He is considered to be taking a more low-key approach than his predecessor.
