Unfortunately, we are long passed the early days of Christian innocence. Since those days the Church has been through numerous highs and lows. Take the era of the Borgia Popes, can one with certainty say that the Holy Spirit guided Cardinals in the election of Pope Callixtus 111? or his brethren Pope Alexander V1? To what extent did the Holy Spirit play in the election of Pope John Paul 1? or indeed of Pope Francis election? The Holy Spirit works through man but the caveat to that is one of preparedness to listen.
