Francis Has Become A Joke – Literally
“When he said: ‘Mattia, it’s me, it’s Francis,’ I knew that it was not a joke” - Mattia Santori, a leftwing Italian activist, said after having received a phone call from Francis. But it was a joke. Santori had not spoken to Francis but to the Francis impersonator Andro Merkù who works for a Radio show. After the phone call, Santori revealed that the fake Francis had invited him to Sancta Marta, but that the coronavirus made the meeting impossible. The impersonator imitated Francis by saying nonsense like “the gentleness that emanates from your political meetings is fundamental.” The fact that such claptrap was taken seriously, seems to indicate that Francis has become his own parody.
