In all fairness, the sea was not new. It is the same sea that Peter fished in the night before. Nor is that sea itself full of surprises. What brought the catch was co-operation and obedience to God's (active) Will. Jesus worked the miracle not a "full of surprises" sea. Likewise we much preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our own time. What point is there in talking about being a witness of goodness and mercy when you do not believe Jesus Christ, who is goodness and mercy Himself?
The bishop of rome should finally put himself at the service of Jesus. So far just himself.
