Give Me That Old Time Religion!

It was good for my mother, it was good for my father.
It just needs a few new lyrics. It was good enough for Irenaeus it was good enough for Irenaeus its good enough for Irenaeus its good enough for me it was good enough for Polycarp it was good enough for Polycarp it was good enough for Polycarp its good enough for me.... It was good enough for St Augustine... you get the picture. To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.

Since we are talking about Negro spiritual music, I have a novel programming idea for Gloria.tv.

Perhaps a new Negro female news presenter would add to the overall inclusiveness, diversity, ecumenism and pastoral effectiveness of the website. The new hire wouldn't necessarily have to be Catholic (although it would be nice) which opens up the pool of potential candidates even more. A good …More

The new hire wouldn't necessarily have to be Catholic (although it would be nice) which opens up the pool of potential candidates even more. A good speaking voice, a pleasant (but not too pleasant) appearance would be the basic qualifications. I don't believe that it would be difficult to find such an individual and it would further label Gloria.tv as the premier innovative Catholic website on the internet.

Bet you anything that you can find Catholics churches that play this protestant tune. The old time religion is that of Luther, Calvin, etc. Heretics all. I will have nothing to do with it because I'm Catholic and my old time religion is that of Peter and Paul, etc.

@Jethro: The "Catholics" need to be told by Protestants what they should know without them...

I am familiar with this song and, of course, the singer Willie Nelson has been a very successful country and western singer in the states for decades. (personally I wish he'd get a haircut and shave but that's just me)

What some of our fellow travelers on the other side of the pond may not be aware of is that the song “Gimmie dat ol' time religion” (alternate spelling) is a standard in Protestant hymnals and was “kept alive” in the work songs of Southern Negros. The song represents the confluence of black spiritual and white gospel song traditions in forming the genre now known as southern gospel.

Since it's that time of year and everyone seems to be in the 'Christmas spirit', here's one of my favorites.
