Cardinal George Pell is incarcerated at the Melbourne Assessment Prison. He is therefore facing similar problems as priests who were incarcerated in National-Socialist concentration camps.
The innocent Cardinal is kept in isolation 23 hours each day. Due to his high profile and his [false] conviction for child abuse he is considered “at risk.”
Pell will spend the next three months in jail. His appeal is likely to be heard by three judges on June 5 and 6.

@alex j: So why then incarcerated priests have the right to say Mass in Austrian (not Australian) prisons?
alex j
@Don Reto Nay. My knowledge of prison regulations pertaining to another country, is minimal.

@Don Reto Nay >>On reflection, the answer to your question as to 'why incarcerated priest in Austria are allowed to celebrate Mass' may be because Austria is predominantly Catholic, where as Australia is predominantly Protestant.

Ministers of religion, Protestant and Catholic, conduct services each Sunday for prisoners who wish to attend Mass or a Protestant service. No prisoner, regardless of prior status in society and regardless of their legal status,- guilty under the law, on remand awaiting trial, etc. is permitted to conduct a religious ceremony. There are prudent reasons for such regulations. It should be also noted that the self same regulations also state that no prisoner can be denied access to a Minister of religion that has been authorised by the Department of Corrections to be of service to prisoners. Stalinists. No!!! Running a prison is not for the faint hearted, it requires a balance of a regimented system and the care, both physical, and physiological, of all inmates.

physiological should read psychological

The Stalinists, The Communists did this too, in the Gulag.

It did not stop St. Maximilian Kolbe. He used smuggled matter. I sincerely hope the inmates have enough sense to help out in a similar way in Australia.
