The idea that all is saved (and by implication no one is damned - what then of the devil and his demons?) is but the opposite extreme of the position that few are saved. One nurtures complacency and the other despair. Both feed atheism. The Catholic is surely that we do not know who is and who is not saved (except for the angels and saints in Heaven) and that we must cast ourselves upon His Mercy, doing our utmost to do His Will in everything. Watering down the doctrine of Judgment and the possibility of eternal damnation in Hell (and therefore the doctrine of Heaven) in the name of His Mercy is sentimentalism and due to a false compassion. It would not be compassionate for a doctor to tell a terminally ill patient that he can be saved nor is it compassionate to tell those immersed in habitual serious sin that they are ok and need not fear. Have we reached a nadir in the Church as well as in the world?

God's Word is unmistakable and unchangeable. What about the parable of the wheat and the tares Jesus told His disciples? Who are they and who is the enemy who sowed the tares?
He told them another parable and said: "The Kingdom of Heaven is likened to the man who sowed good seed in his field. And while men slept his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and he left. But when the grass sprouted it produced fruit; then the tares also appeared. And the servants of the Lord of the house approached and said to him, 'Our Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? From where are the tares in it?' But he said to them: 'An enemy has done this'. His servants said to him, 'Do you want us to go select them out?' But he said to them, 'When you collect the tares, would you not uproot the wheat with them? Let both grow together until the harvest and in the time of the harvest, I shall say to the reapers, ´Select out the tares first and bind them into bundles to burn, but gather the wheat to my granary.´"
...36Then Jesus left the crowds and came to the house and his disciples came to Him and they said to Him: "Explain to us that parable of the tares and of the field."
He answered and said to them: "He who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, but the good seed are the children of the Kingdom and the tares are the children of The Evil One. The enemy who sowed them is Satan, but the harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are the Angels. Therefore, just as the tares are gathered and burn in the fire, so it will be in the end of this world. The Son of Man will send his Angels and they will select from his Kingdom all of those stumbling blocks and all of those evil doers. And they will cast them into the essence of fire, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Whoever has an ear that will hear, let him hear!" Matthew 13,24-30; 36-43
