From Ashes to Easter Ash Wednesday 2025 As many of our readers know, this blog began in controversy. It was born in 2009 out of a challenge from the late Cardinal Avery Dulles to rise above suffering and consider instead its legacy. Many posts in this long prison journal have been about the injustices that I and other priests have faced. But in the week before his death in December 2008, Cardinal Dulles sent a series of letters to me in prison. He challenged me to dig deeper into my own passion narrative. Cardinal Dulles wrote: Many readers, especially those who have also suffered in ways large or small, have found some of our posts rooted in Biblical theology to be spiritually uplifting. No one is more surprised by this than me. So we have collected some of these, in the order in which they appear in Sacred Scripture, as an invitation to a personal Lenten Retreat. Gordon MacRae I never imagined that I would be writing a post with Cardinal George Pell and Hunter Biden’s notorious “Laptop from Hell ” sharing the same title. The connections are circumstantial, but once I stumbled upon them, I knew I had my title for this post. In both stories, the mainstream news media brought little light, but lots of heat, while exposing little truth beyond its own vile bias. In the case of Cardinal Pell’s unjust imprisonment, much of the news media in both Australia and America embraced a wildly imaginative narrative filled with holes to presume his guilt with no evidence. Being sent to prison is by no means an indication of guilt. Nonetheless, I am enthused by a new development. Gloria.tv is an international Catholic video and news sharing venue launched in Switzerland in 2005. It is known for its high degree of fidelity. I cannot see it, of course, but on rare occasions over the years it has reported on one of my posts. After reviewing and then reposting “Convicted for Cash,” the 44-minute video documentary about my trial by Frank X. Panico, Gloria.tv invited me to establish a page and submit selected past posts on the site. The result has been a huge increase in visits to this blog from around the world.
