An ecumenical commemoration is scheduled for 2030 to mark the 500th anniversary of the Diet of Augsburg and the Confessio Augustana.
This was announced by Curia Archbishop Flavio Pace, Secretary of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, speaking to VaticanNews.va on January 22.
Monsignor Pace described the Augsburg Confession correctly as an attempt to “find common ground, a common profession of faith, among the countries we now call the Reformation countries”. However, he added that it should be commemorated to “rediscover a common basis” for today.
He even expressed the idea that the path toward unity might one day mean “sitting at the one table of Christ.”

Catholic Decline in Latin America - Paganism Flourishes
The share of adults identifying as Catholic has declined sharply across much of Latin America over the past decade. The number of people with no religious affiliation has risen, according to a January 21 Pew Research Center report. This marks a shift in a region where more than 90% of people were Catholic around 1900.
The report, Catholicism Has Declined in Latin America Over the Past Decade is based on surveys of more than 6,200 adults in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru conducted in spring 2024. Tragic Deaths of Two Franciscan University Students
Two students from Franciscan University of Steubenville, USA — Luke Reimer (20) of Indian Shores, Florida, and Mary Mich (20) of Downingtown, Pennsylvania — were found dead inside a vehicle shortly after noon on Monday in a parking lot near St. Agnes Residence Hall on the campus in Steubenville, Ohio.
Steubenville police responded after someone requested a welfare check and discovered them in the car.
Malfunction Suspected
Early indicators from police and the university suggest no foul play is suspected. Authorities have said a possible cause may be a vehicle exhaust or engine malfunction while the two were sitting together talking in a running car.
