Genetic Discrimination

Vatican

The June 10 edition of L’Osservatore Romano has published an article by neonatologist and bioethicist Carlo Bellieni denouncing “handi-phobia”. This is a fear of handicapped persons. It has led to the widespread abortion of children with Down syndrome and the euthanasia of the disabled. A society that has begun to reject racial discrimination, writes Bellieni, nonetheless practices widespread genetic discrimination. It spends billions for prenatal diagnoses that lead to abortion rather than making similar investments seeking cures.

Useless Letter

Vatican

The Knights of Columbus have published a recently discovered August 1943 letter from the Venerable Pope Pius XII to then US-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In this letter the pope asked the Allied forces to spare civilians, churches, and charitable institutions. The letter was found in archives of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights served as a channel between the Holy See and the United States in the absence of diplomatic relations between the two states. The wartime Pope wrote his letter three months after the Allies began to bomb Rome. Five months after he wrote the letter, the abbey of Monte Cassino was destroyed by US forces.

The Driver had Gotten out of Hand

Vatican

Fr. Fillippo di Giacomo is saying that murdered Bishop Luigi Padovese canceled his trip to Cyprus because he feared that his driver – who later confessed to killing the bishop - might attempt an attack on Pope Benedict XVI during his stay on the island. Bishop Padovese was the Apostolic Vicar of Anatolia and President of the Turkish Bishops’ Conference. Fr di Giacomo writes for publications such as L’Unitá and La Stampa. He revealed that “hours before Padovese was killed, the Turkish Government called him to say that his driver, who they themselves had put in his service four years before, had gotten out of hand. That is to say, he had embraced the fundamentalist cause.”
