Catholic Relief Services/Uganda (2/2)

This is an interview with Sr Pauline Silver Acayo of the little sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, who is a peace officer in the Catholic Relief Services. This interview is from October 2008 and it was conducted at Cabrini College (catholic tertiary institution in Philadelphia).

Sr Pauline describes the horrific results of the 23-year old war fought by the Lord's Resistance Army in northern Uganda. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is a guerilla group founded by Joseph Kony, a former catholic, who wanted to overthrow the government of Uganda to establish a theocratic state ruled by the ten commandments. The LRA uses terror tactics including the deliberate targetting of civilians, mutilation of prisoners and abduction of children on a wide scale. They are a small army, but they have been fighting a war on three fronts in Northern Uganda, Southern Sudan and the democratic republic of the Congo, with none of their opponents succeeding in vanquishing them, and they have inflicted terrible suffering on the people of the region.

Sr Pauline talks about her peace work in the area, including the reconciliation between former soldiers in the LRA and their victims, and she describes the suffering of the people.
