Pope Francis Takes Care of a Pacifier

During yesterday’s Wednesday audience, pope Francis used, for the first time, the Spanish language when addressing the Argentinean soccer Club Atlético S. Lorenzo. The team started off playing in a Church's backyard with the condition that they would also go to mass on Sundays. During the audience, the pope had to put a dummy pacifier back into the mouth of a toddler who was handed to him.

Difficult Situation of the Catholics in Europe

Vast demographic shifts in the Catholic population are moving the Church’s center from Europe, Catholic News Service writes. Whereas two-thirds of the world's Catholics lived in Europe in 1910, fewer than a quarter do today. European Catholics have declined from 38.5 percent to 23.7 percent of the population since the Second Vatican Council. Catholic bastions such as Slovakia and Poland provide a third of all European ordinations and have a clergy presence throughout the continent.

Patti Smith Meets the Pope

The American singer Patti Smith has met Pope Francis during yesterday’s General Audience on Saint Peter's square. According to the Corriere della Sera, she said: “After the news that pope Benedict XVI had retired, I prayed that his successor would have chosen the name Francis.” Patti Smith is not Catholic. She is in Rome in order to participate in a festival.

Marriage is Truly About Justice for Children

The fight against the redefinition of marriage is a Fight about justice, writes Denise Hunnell a Fellow of Human Life International on Zenit. She explains: “The authentic institution of marriage is truly about justice for children.” And, “The state has no compelling interest to recognize the mutual affection of adults. The state interest in the legal recognition of marriage has been the acknowledgement of the uniqueness of the union of one man and one woman. Children born of such a union must be protected and the connection to their parents must be preserved.”

Praying for Benedict XVI.

“Every night I pray for the Holy Fathers,” Terry Nelson writes on his blog Abbey-Roads. He continues, “I pray for Benedict first, and then Francis. Like a little kid, I suppose I miss Pope Benedict very much and always resist the temptation to complain that we never hear about him now that he is like a cloistered Carmelite. We never see him or receive messages either. His birthday is coming up in six days on St. Benedict Joseph's feast day. I've always imagined that the Pope had a special devotion to the homeless saint and perhaps even identified with him.”
