Cruise ship Costa Concordia runs aground off Italy at least 3 dead.

PORTO SANTO STEFANO, Italy — Survivors from a luxury cruise ship that ran aground and tipped over, leaving at least three dead and 69 people still unaccounted for, described Saturday a chaotic evacuation, as plates and glasses crashed and they crawled along upended hallways trying to reach safety.

Three bodies were recovered from the sea after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the tiny island of Giglio near the coast of Tuscany late Friday, tearing a 160-foot gash in its hull and sending in a rush of water.

The ANSA news agency quoting the prefect's office in the province of Grosseto as saying that authorities have accounted for 4,165 of the 4,234 people who had boarded the liner.

By morning Saturday, the ship was lying virtually flat off Gigio's coast, its starboard side submerged in the water and the huge gash showing clearly on its upturned hull.

Coastguards were forced to evacuate more than 4,000 passengers and crew from the Costa Concordia, near to the island of Isola del Giglio.

The ship had sailed earlier on Friday from Civitavecchia port near Rome for a Mediterranean cruise. Passengers were eating dinner, when they heard a loud bang.

Costa Concordia is a Concordia-class cruise ship owned and operated by Costa Cruises. She was built at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente yards in Italy. The name Concordia was intended to express the wish for continuing harmony, unity and peace between European nations.

She is the namesake of the Concordia class, with sisters Costa Serena, Carnival Splendor—which was built for Carnival Cruise Lines—Costa Pacifica, Costa Favolosa, and Costa Fascinosa. Costa Concordia entered service in July 2006 and was the largest ship to be built in Italy, at 114,500 tons.
The ship came to international attention in January 2012 when she ran aground off Isola del Giglio, Italy, resulting in the evacuation of over 4,000 people on board. At least three passengers died, 18 others were injured and around 50 are still unaccounted for.

How does a multi million dollar vessel equipped with thousands of dollars worth of navigational, depth and contour equipment and a crew of probably ten officers run aground in the Med Sea? So if the Captain is not at the helm there is no one else on the "trained" staff to navigate the ship safetly?
