Ambition is a defect borne of pride, or of inordinate love of honors and dignities (vanity), or of authority over others. It has three causes: [1] One seeks praise for a quality he lacks. [2] One desires honor for himself without referring it to God. [3] One wishes for honor without using it to benefit his neighbor. Pride and vanity often deceive us, self-love always threatens to infect us, and these tinge all we do. It is very hard to seek honors rightly and so one must always check his motives. Remedies for such sins: Seek the truth; Look for opportunities to be last; Accept your place with meekness; Don’t fight over trivial matters; Pursue positions in accordance with reason and charity; Employ honors to the benefit of others; Embrace the Cross; Look to the glories of Heaven.
