Unveiling of letter relating to Divorce of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.

AP 23 Jun 2009 A perfect replica of the letter sent to Pope Clement VII in 1530 to support the divorce of Henry VIII from Catherine of Aragon was unveiled at the Vatican on Tuesday.
The letter is considered one of the crucial documents in the famous case of the divorce of Henry the VIII and his subsequent marriage with Anne Boleyn, which ultimately led to England's separation from the Roman Catholic church.
The replica of the letter is a perfect facsimile reproduction of the original, and was made by Italian publisher Scrinium.
It is one metre long and two metres wide and is adorned with 81 red wax seals.
The original document is kept in the Vatican secret archive and is not open to public view.
The letter was sent to pope Clement VII on 13 July 1530 asking for the annulment of King Henry VIII's marriage with Catherine of Aragon.
Two versions of the letter were drawn up in 1530. One was sent to the Vatican and the other was kept in England as a record.
The English copy of the letter is kept in the National Archives at Kew, near London, but this version is in poor condition and without the original seals.
David Starkey, Historian and Tudor family expert said the letter was one of the "central documents of the most famous court case in history," which caused England to separate from the Catholic church and start on a "strange path" towards Protestantism.
He said it was a key part of "the most important event in English history."
Henry VIII wanted an annulment so that his children from his second marriage would be his legitimate heirs, and a succession problem would be avoided.
The original letter was just one of thousands of letters and diplomatic documents that were exchanged between the English monarchy and the Vatican to legitimate the Henry VIII's second marriage.
Among those who signed the original letter were two archbishops, two dukes, 13 counts, four bishops, and 26 barons.
