Monastier svätého Antona bol založený ako prvý v roku 1995 vo vyprahnutej Arizonskej púšti, približne hodinu cesty južne od Phoenixu. 5:42 order to protect yourself from sin. Once, I saw that a bus driver in Greece had put this sign in the rear window

6:05 In this way, Christians should keep away from sin as much as possible.
6:13 Papa Ephraim: He very quickly became popular, as a person with enormous spiritual experience, and people
6:18 began inviting him to America every year. And the Elder saw that many people had a great need
6:25 for spiritual direction, but had nowhere they could find it.
6:29 George Hondropoulos was a member of the community of Greek-Americans who, in the 1990s, asked Fr.
6:36 Ephraim to found a monastery in the US, and who even collected the money necessary to purchase the land.
6:42 We asked him to open a monastery here; we really needed this. Our Greek Orthodox Church
6:48 at this time had fallen into decline, and had drawn closer to Protestantism, or Catholicism.
6:59 But when we talked about a monastery, I never dreamed of such a monastery!
7:03 I thought there would be a little house, and we would come and drink tea with Elder Ephraim.

8:08 We began with four prefabricated houses. Later, we built the church, the trapeza, houses for pilgrims,

8:20 The hardest thing was to adapt to the desert climate. In summer there are extremely high temperatures!
8:28 Monk deacon Seraphim: Arizona is a very hot state, in the summer it can be 110-115 degrees in the shade,
8:35 and for the fathers who came from Mt. Athos, though it can also be warm there, it was a shock,
8:43 that it is possible to live here at all, as the climate is so hot.
8:47 There were only cacti growing here, so we’ve planted all these trees with our own hands. Elder Ephraim himself

10:06 Fr. Ephraim told them to drill even deeper, and they drilled more and more, and eventually they came to a flowing underground river!
10:21 The monastery in the desert grew quickly, and more and more Orthodox from all over America came, and soon
10:27 Elder Ephraim realized that one monastery was too little. He then founded, one after the other, eighteen more
10:35 monasteries in the US and Canada - in New York, Texas, Florida, Washington, South Carolina,
10:42 Pennsylvania, Illinois, California, Michigan, Montreal, and Toronto.
10:48 Elder Ephraim appointed his disciples as the heads of these monasteries.
10:54 He saw that could not manage it all himself, that thousands of people were in need of spiritual support.
11:00 And he knew that his disciples could provide this help to people, and so he opened monasteries all over America,
11:07 and everyone can find a nearby monastery, where they can get advice, or go to confession.
11:14 Now there are Orthodox monasteries everywhere, in every part of America.
11:18 Once, Elder Joseph the Hesychast, the spiritual father of Elder Ephraim, appeared to him and called “Kuchiko!”
11:24 That was his nickname, which means “very small.” Elder Joseph poured 20 oranges into his lap, and said:
11:32 “As many oranges as I have brought you, you must establish so many monasteries in the US and Canada”.
11:37 This means that it turns out that only one is missing. So we say to him, “Don’t rush!”
11:42 We just want Elder Ephraim to be with us always”.
11:51 Priest monk Philaretos: This country was spiritually hungry, and God sent us Elder Ephraim,
12:00 to give people hope and bring them together in prayer and contemplation.
12:11 Pilgrims, of course, still come primarily to Arizona, the biggest Orthodox monastery in the US.
12:17 Just as the first hermit, St. Anthony, did in Egypt in the third century, so today monks struggle ascetically in the
12:23 monastery that bears his name. At night, monks come out of their comfortable cells into the desert,
12:29 in order to spend some hours in solitude with God.
12:35 This custom was instituted with them while still on Mt. Athos, with Elder Joseph, - a nightly prayer rule
12:42 many hours long, which they fulfilled partly in their cells, and partly in the open air. They prayed aloud,
12:48 o make it easier to struggle against sleep. And in this monastery, Elder Ephraim called us to do the same from
12:54 the very beginning. It is very pleasant to pray here at night in the midst of nature!
13:03 You feel a distinct contrast here. The monastery is here, with completely modern facilities, electricity, showers, all provided for the pilgrims and monks.
13:17 But if you go just thirty steps beyond the borders of the monastery, all around you is a wild desert, like it was a
13:26 thousand years ago, when the holy fathers lived, and this is very helpful for prayer, the peace, tranquility, and the pure air.
13:40 Among the daily trials of the Arizona monks, there is not only the scorching sun and the heat,
13:45 but also grave danger that threatens them at every step.
13:49 Every night, you can hear the jackals howl, and in the warm season, from April to October, there are rattlesnakes and scorpions.
14:09 They don’t approach us in the monastery very often. You just need to be careful. Don’t walk
14:14 where you can’t see, don’t set your hand or foot where you can’t see what is there, use a flashlight at night.

15:46 George Sioris: I work in a hospital. Once, one of the novices in the monastery was working with a saw,
15:53 and seriously injured his fingers, and he was taken into surgery. And then a miracle happened,
15:59 that the whole hospital talked about. One of his fingers had already turned black, and the doctor set a day and
16:05 time when it would be amputated. The next morning, on the day of the operation, Elder Ephraim and Fr. Paisius,
16:11 the abbot of the monastery, came to the hospital together and prayed. After this, the surgeon came to the
16:16 patient in the ward and examined him – and canceled the operation. The hand was completely healthy.
16:23 Once, Elder Ephraim and I flew to California, to open a new monastery, and while we were being driven in a car
16:31 he sang the Akathist to the Theotokos (singing in Greek).
16:40 And halfway there, I thought, “Poor man, he’s already almost 70, and he has to travel from town to town,
16:48 it’s very tiring. I should pray for him.” I opened my prayer book, and began to pray, “Jesus Christ, have mercy
16:56 on him,” in English. “Jesus Christ, have mercy on Thy servant”. I wanted to read the whole prayer rule.
17:03 But when I had only once said this quietly to myself, Elder Ephraim immediately stopped singing.
17:10 And he started to pronounce in English, with a strong Greek accent; and he knew only a few words in English.
17:24 I was shocked, and at first I was scared - he knows everything I do! But then I calmed down - I wasn’t
17:31 doing anything wrong. Later, the next day, I asked him, as if nothing had happened, “Elder, when someone is
17:38 praying for you, do you know about it?” And he said, “Yes, my child, I always know this and am thankful for it”.
17:46 In New York, one young man got in an accident, and was in intensive care. The parents spent day and night
17:55 at the hospital. One day they came to see their son, and saw that he was completely well. They were so amazed!
18:03 And their son said, “Fr. Ephraim was here all night, he sat on the bed and prayed for me.” The parents thought
18:10 he was crazy, since no one was allowed into the room. They asked the nurse, and she confirmed
18:15 that a priest had been there at night. The parents showed her pictures of Fr. Ephraim,
18:21 and she said, “Yes, that was him”. Even though, of course, he had never left the monastery.
