Muslim Group Threatens Protest if Pope Says Something Unexpected And Unacceptable In Bangladesh.
saltandlighttv on Nov 23, 2017 With the Pope’s apostolic trip to Asia next week, religious leaders of different faiths in Bangladesh are hoping that this Papal visit will promote the much-needed harmony and tolerance in the Muslim-majority nation.
It is reported, however, by local media, that many hard-line Muslim groups including the Hefazat-e-Islam, will protest if the pontiff says or does anything "unexpected and unacceptable" This group has openly attacked what they see as Christian evangelization.
With the country struggling to cope with a huge refugee influx triggered by violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, Cardinal Patrick D'Rozario of Dhaka noted that Bangladesh had lived up its "traditional values" by accepting fleeing Rohingya. "The Pope is coming for harmony and peace, not for just Rohingya but for all," the Cardinal said. "He is not coming to solve any problem, but he will surely have a message for them and for everyone, and is he is expected to take up the issue either publicly or privately during his visit."
Sadly, the Bangladesh's pluralistic and tolerant image has been tainted by a deadly rise of radicalism in recent years. Since 2013, Islamic militants have murdered over 50 people including liberal Muslims, religious minorities and foreigners.
Earlier today in Rome, Pope Francis received the members of the Franciscan Families of the First Order and of the Third Regular Order.
In his message to them, the Pope emphasized the Order’s proper name, the Order of Friars Minor. The word ‘minor’, he said, is an essential aspect of their religious life.
Saint Francis’ inspiration to name his religious brothers “friars minor,” the Pope said, came from his desire to make Christ and the Gospel, the foundation of his life.
The Pope reminded them that the life of Saint Francis was marked by an encounter with God who had made Himself poor: “a humble and hidden presence that the Little Poor Man of Assisi, adored and contemplated in the Incarnation, in the Cross and in the Eucharist.”
