Secular but Still Open

Vatican

The Year of the Priest, which was announced by Pope Benedict XVI back in March, will start coming Friday. This means that between June 19 and 29, the Church will celebrate simultaneously both, the ending Year of St. Paul and the beginning Year of the Priest. Many dioceses are planning special activities centered around the example of St. Jean-Marie Vianney, the patron-saint of diocesan priests, who died 150 years ago in August 1859. For the occasion Cardinal Claudio Hummes said: Each of the world's 408,000 priests should feel loved, respected, valued and supported in his vocation to bring the Gospel to an increasingly secular -- but still open – world.

An Unusually Blunt Speech

Vatican

According to Pope Benedict XVI the aim of the Year for Priests is to rebuild “in the priest a strong spiritual identity, faithful to his original mission," writes Sandro Magister in the Italian magazine Espresso. The noted Vatican-watcher says that the Holy Father sees an urgent need to cleanse the priesthood from corruption and to restore a clear model for 21st-century ministry. Magister calls attention to-- and reprints-- an unusually blunt speech by Archbishop Jean-Louis Brugues, the secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, detailing serious problems in the training of young priests.

To Be Published Soon

Vatican

Caritas in Veritate, the third encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI, will be published soon, according to the words of the Pontiff addressed to the members of the Foundation “Centesimus Anus – Pro Pontifice” on Saturday. “As you know, my Encyclical dedicated precisely to the vast issue of the economy and of labor will be published soon“, the Holy Father said. Most sources indicate that the letter will be signed and will be made public on the Feast of the Saints Peter and Paul.

Did They Find Another Excuse?

One month after being allowed to keep her crown, Carrie Prejean was fired Wednesday by the Miss California USA pageant. Miss California officials said Prejean was allegedly dismissed because she refused to cooperate and did not fulfill her obligations for the role by making certain appearances. Prejean, though, said she was fired because of her support for California Proposition 8 and opposition to "gay marriage."
