The “Identikit” of the Father
Gospel of Sunday, March 31, 2019, fourth of Lenten
Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus, telling us the parable of the good Father in the passage from the Gospel of Luke that we will listen Sunday, March 31, outlines, so to speak, a sort of identikit of the Father of whom He is the visible image.
Usually meditating on this parable the attention focuses above all on the younger son, on his misadventures and finally on his return to the Father's house. But now we would like to concentrate above all on the eldest son who only apparently stays with his father and does his will, actually he is only physically close to the Father and his obedience looks more like that of a slave than that of a son. in fact his heart is very far from him.
From the verbs used by Jesus in describing the relationship between the Father and his elder Son, we can understand something of the mystery of the Father's being and acting.
As you know, the eldest son, outraged by the welcome that the Father had reserved for the prodigal son, did not want to enter the house to participate in the party that had been set up for his return. The attitude that the Father uses towards his eldest son is truly upsetting: in fact, the Father, says Jesus, went out to meet the Son ...
“Went out… “ Truly, the Father, in Jesus, comes "out of himself", from his silence, from his mystery to love the whole of humankind up to the "foolishness of the Cross"
To beg him ... God who, in the crucified Jesus, begs every man and woman to be reconciled with Him... he begs them to open their hearts, hardened by pride, indifference and resentment, to the joy of love that makes them perfect as the Father is, He who makes his sun rise on good and bad and makes rain on the just and unjust. And who rejoices more for a converted sinner than for all who do not need conversion.
And finally the amazing words: Everything that is mine is yours! said the Father. What an incredible, wonderful, incomprehensible mystery. God the Father who, in Jesus his Son, gives us all that is his, that is, his divine life ... How can we, dear brothers and sisters, not to love with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our strength to such a wonderful Father?
