Cardinal George and Archbishop Eterović comment on the synod synthesis.

Offering both high praise and mild criticism, Synod of Bishops participants have responded to Cardinal Marc Ouellet's relatio post disceptationem. In the free discussion periods and the language-based small groups, Bishops have answered the Cardinal's 19 discussion questions and commented on the report itself.

"As relator general, Cardinal Ouellet did a very good job. He compiled all the contributions of the Synod Fathers on the theme of the Word of God in the life and the mission of the Church.”

"It was a very comprehensive and illuminating report. I'm glad that we an opportunity to discuss it further in small groups."

The Quebec City prelate was tasked with synthesizing 290 interventions submitted by the synod fathers, fraternal delegates and auditors, requiring some details to be left out.

"One of the areas that is lacking I believe would be the heart of the Gospel is the mercy of God and the forgiveness of sins. And secondly, why is it so difficult to understand the Bible today and proclaim the word of God with deep conviction?"

The synod's Secretary General says that Pope Benedict XVI has also influenced the report, particularly through last Tuesday's unscripted address before the assembly.

"The Holy Father already made public discourses--I refer to the homily during the opening ceremony. But also he spoke during the free discussion. He explained how one has to read integrally the Holy Scriptures."
