Very Important Nomination

Vatican

Pope Benedict has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re as prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. He has named Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Archbishop of Quebec, as his successor. Cardinal Ouellet will also succeed Re as the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. The appointment of Cardinal Ouellet ends months of speculation about the future leadership of the Congregation for Bishops. The position is a highly influential one. The Congregation supervises the selection of most of the world's diocesan bishops. Cardinal Ouellet is a longtime ally of Pope Benedict’s. He served with the future Pontiff on the editorial board of the international theological journal Communio.

A Model of a Good Shepherd

Vatican

Yesterday during his weekly audience Pope Benedict XVI returned to the theme of the priesthood. The Holy Father spoke about St. Joseph Cafasso, a 19th-century Italian priest. The Pope cited him as the model of “a good shepherd, understanding and compassionate." He underlined the Saint’s devotion to hearing confessions and providing spiritual direction. St. Joseph Cafasso served as a prison chaplain. In 1950 Pope Pius XII declared him the patron of Italian priests serving in that capacity.

Complaint Against Belgian Prosecutors

Belgium

A Belgian man has filed a formal complaint against the scandalous police seizure of files belonging to a Church commission investigating sex-abuse complaints. Jan Hertogen claims that he was sexually abused by a priest. He said that he had given his testimony to the Church-appointed commission on the understanding that it would not be passed along to prosecutors. The police violated his privacy be seizing the files, he complained. Hertogen argues that all of abuse victims who offered the testimony to the Church commission should be included in his complaint against prosecutors.

New Nuncio in Poland

Vatican

Pope Benedict named Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the permanent observer of the Holy See for the United Nations as his new apostolic nuncio to Poland. The previous nuncio to Poland, Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk, was named Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland in May. The Pontiff did not yet name a successor to Archbishop Migliore.

I must confess: I am not sure. Just wearing hats would not excite me (I have lots of hair on my head). 🙂
