I realize that many traditionalists long for a monarchy such as St. King Louis IX of France - but for every "good & holy sovereign" there are scores of mediocre to wicked tyrannical kings. Since monarchy is hereditary, there's no guarantee that a good king won't be followed by a bad inept one. Even in the Old Testament, Israel's desire for a king was seen as a rejection of God's rule over the chosen people, and the prophets warned of the down side of having a monarchy. But the people demanded it, so God let them have what they wished even though it led to centuries of hardship & apostate leaders. See: 1 Samuel 8:10-22.
