Old west facade of Bolton Priory.
Dating to c.1240, the early English facade of Bolton Priory was preserved by the addition of a porch in the 1520s which was to have formed the base of a grand west tower. Work on this stopped at the Dissolution in 1539, but the nave of the priory church was mercifully spared and converted into the parish church. The rest of the monastery, having been stripped of anything of value, had been left to fall into ruin.
