Nigerian Bishop: "Francis Must Understand This"

Monsignor Matthew Hassan Kukah, 71, the Bishop of Sokoto, Nigeria, spoke to the oligarch-run anti-Church ElPais.com (22 February).

He believes that the scandal caused by Francis' homosexual propaganda "Fiducia supplicans" has been "exaggerated by the media".

According to Monsignor Kukah, Francis "did not say anything that implies a break with the tradition of the Church" and "did not deny that this state of life [= practiced homosexuality] is a sin".

He explains that during a marriage ceremony, when the vows are exchanged, the priest asks the couple if they are ready to receive children from God in love.

He notes that a Catholic marriage cannot be officiated without this question: "So if I have to celebrate the wedding of two homosexuals, what will I say to them?"

This is the position of the African bishops, says Monsignor Kukah, "and Francis must understand this".

He insists that the Church's teaching on marriage is clear: "If a homosexual wants to validate his or her position, we tell him or her that it is not in accordance with the principles of the Gospel."

The bishop's concern is "that the sanctity of the human person is being eroded".

"The position of the Catholic Church is very clear, and if you don't agree with it, you are free to leave. But if you want to be a Catholic, these are our laws."
