80 Years Ago: What Would the Amoris-Laetitia Pope Do With Him?

Monsignor Salvador Montes de Oca (1895-1944) was appointed Bishop of Valencia, Venezuela, in June 1927. He was 31 years old and had been ordained a priest just five years earlier.

As a bishop he was known for upholding Catholic doctrine, which should not surprise anybody since he was a Catholic bishop.

In 1929, his defence of marriage and his opposition to divorce led to his expulsion from Venezuela for "inciting rebellion". Today, under Francis, he would face a similar fate.

Monsignor Montes was forced to live in Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago from the end of 1929 to the end of 1931. Public opposition to his exile put great pressure on the Venezuelan government, which allowed him to return in 1931.

Three years later, in March 1934, Monsignor Montes travelled to Rome for the ad limina visit, where he contracted peritonitis after an acute bout of appendicitis.

These health complications motivated his desire to resign from his see, because he wanted to enter religious life. He joined the Fathers of the Blessed Sacrament. But in 1943, he entered the Charterhouse of Farneta, Lucca, and became a novice with the name of Dom Bernardo.

In September 1944, troops from the 16th SS Panzergrenadier Division appeared at the gate of the Charterhouse and said they had come with gifts for the Carthusians.

But then, they broke into the monastery to arrest 32 partisans and Jews who were being sheltered there. Some managed to escape, but the monks did not flee. Six monks and six lay brothers, including Dom Bernardo, were arrested, tortured and executed by firing squad. Among the murdered Carthusians were two Germans, a Swiss and a Spaniard.

On 10 September 1944 - 80 years ago - Dom Bernardo and other monks were machine-gunned to death at Monte Magno di Camaiore, near Lucca. Dom Bruno was 48 years old.

His remains were thrown into a mass grave with the other monks killed with him. In 1947 a team of medics led by Dr Mariotti found them. They are now buried in his old cathedral under the high altar.
