Official catalog of Rosary indulgences, published by order of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII

LETTER FROM THE SACRED CONGREGATION TO THE ORDINARIES

Monsignor,

In the Constitution on the brotherhoods of the Rosary of Mary (October 2, 1898), SP Leo XIII decreed among other things: "That a catalog of all the indulgences granted by the Sovereign Pontiffs to the brotherhood of the Holy Rosary and to the faithful who recite it with devotion, be, as soon as possible prepared with diligence and care, written with attention by the Master General of the Order of Brother Preachers, examined by the SC of Indulgences and Relics and approved by Apostolic authority. »

What was thus ordered has just been precisely executed, and the Holy Father has entrusted me with the pleasant care of sending to all times and to all people who are interested the above-mentioned list which was drawn up with the greatest possible care. great care and approved by His authority.

And, in eagerly executing the will of the Most Holy Father, I have no doubt that Your Lordship admires the constant zeal which animates him and considers that there is a divine impulse in this act of the Sovereign Pontiff who, for many years, has been urging all the faithful to resort to the protection of the august Mother of God through the practice of the Most Holy Rosary.

It was on the first day of September 1883 that the Holy Father, in his Encyclical letters Supremi Apostolatus , — where he recalled the benefits obtained for the Christian people by the merits of the Rosary of Mary, — expressed for the first time the hope certain by which He was animated to see this type of prayer, even in these difficult times for the Church, becoming very useful in the fight against the invasive force of errors which are spreading on all sides, against the overflow of corrupt morals and against the violence from powerful adversaries. This is why, after adding precious indulgences to this devotion, he decreed that the powerful Mother of God would be, throughout the universe and during the entire month of October, particularly honored by Catholics by means of the Rosary.

Since that time, the Most Holy Father, almost every year, has never ceased to exhort Christian peoples to persevere in the custom of the Rosary to obtain for the Church the powerful protection of the Mother of God. And, in order to increase the zeal of the faithful, He, with the greatest wisdom, brought to light in his Letters everything that could further enhance the Rosary of Mary, either by exploring the nature of this prayer, or by exalting the power it has to warm Christian virtues, or, finally, by explaining with as much knowledge as love the maternal mercy of the Virgin in helping us.

The list of Sacred Indulgences that I address to you is, in a way, like the crowning achievement of this work so perseveringly instituted. And it is thus, in fact, that the Most Holy Father shows himself faithful to his promise and confirms, with abundant wealth, everything he has done until now to extend and develop the devotion of the Rosary.

The catalog includes two parts, one contains the indulgences granted only to the confreres of the Rosary of Mary, the other lists the indulgences common to all the faithful.

Your Lordship will take care to demonstrate to your flock the largesse of the Apostolic See. On this occasion the Holy Father has the confidence that You will take advantage of this opportunity to exhort more effectively the faithful to preserve with piety and zeal the re-flourishing habit of the Rosary, either by giving their name to the Brotherhood, or by consecrating the month of October to the Queen of the Rosary, or by reciting every day, in her home, with her family, the pious office of the Rosary.

The most glorious Queen of heaven, touched by this assiduous prayer, will hear the unfortunate children of Eve and, in her clemency, she will hear them and will undoubtedly also grant them in abundance the help that we ask of her for the afflicted Church.

I pray with all my heart for the constant happiness of Your Lordship.
From Your Majesty, the very attached brother,

FR. J.M. CARD. GOTTI,
Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Indulg. and the SS. Relics.

A. SABATUCCI, Arch. of Antinoë, secretary.

DECREE

In accordance with article 16 of the apostolic constitution Ubi primum given in 1898, the Minister General of the Order of Brother Preachers took care of drawing up and presenting to the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences a new catalog of indulgences of the Rosary.

The Sacred Congregation examined it with the greatest care, even calling on the enlightenment of several of its consultors.

When everything was carefully examined, the Sacred Congregation was of the opinion that several things had to be corrected, added, explained or more briefly expressed in this catalog, and it submitted all these modifications to HH Pope Leo XIII through the undersigned Cardinal Prefect .

In an audience of August 29, 1899, His Holiness deigned to accept the corrections. At the same time, she approved the new catalog according to the latest content in all and in each of its parts, continued with her apostolic authority and granted again, as much as was necessary, all the indulgences contained therein.

In the same audience, she declared abrogated and revoked all those which, granted to the confreres of the Most Holy Rosary, were not mentioned in this catalog. Thus any brotherhood of the Most Holy Rosary erected or to be erected by the Minister General of the Order of Brother Preachers will only enjoy the indulgences mentioned in this new catalog. And this notwithstanding all things to the contrary.

Given in Rome, at the secretariat of the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences,August 29, 1899 .
