To Russia with Love: The Heroic Story of Father Walter Ciszek, SJ Father Walter Ciszek, SJ, was a heroic American Catholic priest who went to Soviet Russia as a missionary in 1940 to serve the spiritual needs of the Russian people. Born Nov. 4, 1904, in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Father was ordained a priest for eternity in 1937 in Rome. He was the first American Jesuit ordained in the Byzantine Catholic Rite. While a missionary in Russia, Father was arrested in 1941 by the thugs of the Communist secret police and unjustly held captive in Soviet political concentration camps for 23 years until he was returned to the U.S. in a spy exchange in 1963. The Father Walter Ciszek Prayer League, based in Shenandoah, was formed in 1985 to promote the cause of his Sainthood. The cause was formally opened in 1989.
